Spam Identification at the ISR

CMT is pleased to announce a new system that will help identify Spam messages that you may receive in your email.

The system uses an industry standard application called Spam Assassin to identify Spam. The system uses a heuristic algorithm to detect spam and will mark messages by inserting SPAM: at the beginning of the message subject line. Messages are not viewed by personnel. Message content information is not logged. No messages are blocked or withheld by this system; just a simple addition to the subject is performed.

Internal email is not marked. Only folks who are using a client (Outlook, outlook express, etc) that goes against our Microsoft mail server will receive mail marked with the SPAM word. It will not function for folks who are using other university mail servers.

You can expect roughly 75% of SPAM to be marked by this system. This percentage is the result of carefully enforced settings to prevent false positives. Upon implementation it will take 7-10 days for our email to reach this level of performance. Implementation will begin on March 1st.

To automatically remove Spam from your inbox you will need to set up a rule in Outlook to move email marked as SPAM: to another folder in your Outlook email. See the link at http://compute.isr.umich.edu/ms(ISR Spam Information) to perform this procedure and see additional Spam information.

Contact CMT at 3-7699 or open a helpdesk call at http://compute.isr.umich.edu/ms (Request Computing Help) if you have any questions or concerns.
